Cromwell Polythene discusses environmental issues with local MP

Supplier of sacks, bags and products for the storage and collection of waste and recyclables, Cromwell Polythene, has highlighted a range of industry and environmental issues during a recent visit from its local MP.

Nigel Adams, Member of Parliament for Selby and Ainsty, spoke at length with Leeds-based Cromwell’s Managing Director, James Lee, when he visited the company on Earth Day 2016, held on 22nd April.

During his visit, Adams agreed to lend his support to the all-party parliamentary packaging group and Lee highlighted a number of areas in which he believes the Government’s assistance would be helpful.

“I explained Cromwell’s part in the UK packaging industry, which contributes £12bn to the UK economy and employs 85,000 people, more than the gas, oil, or pharmaceutical sectors. I also took the opportunity to highlight how packaging actually saves non-renewable resources, far greater than those used to make the packaging itself,” Lee explained.

“Our very broad discussion ranged from how modern, lightweight packaging contributes to the minimization of food waste throughout the UK supply chain, to the circular economy and the importance of waste as a resource. I also took the opportunity to suggest how the government can assist the waste management sector through the implementation of cohesive, nationwide collection systems, reducing the present 300 or so systems to around 10.

“It was a really positive meeting and I was greatly encouraged by Mr Adams willingness to take on board such a diverse range of topics – from waste to security of energy supply, from carbon reduction targets to the well-meaning, but mistaken imposition of the carrier bag tax.”
