Duo cleans up with ‘rubbish’ contract

Manchester-based polythene manufacturer, Duo UK, has won a new contract with environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy, to manufacture the green sacks used for its ’Big Tidy Up’ campaign.

The contract ensures the bags are made from 100 percent recycled polythene that is collected, reprocessed and manufactured in the UK.

Since 2008, The Big Tidy Up is said to have mobilised more than half a million people in local communities to collect almost 120,000 bags of rubbish.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Phil Barton, said: “The Big Tidy Up is a hugely important campaign. Our aim is to get everybody out on the streets, cleaning up their corner of a community. Providing 100% recycled rubbish bags for everyone who is ready and willing to get involved is vital. It was really important to us that the sacks are as environmentally-friendly as possible and the fact Duo is a local supplier with a factors within a 25 mile radius of our HQ reduces our carbon footprint and transport costs even further.”

Duo says the sack for Keep Britain Tidy’s campaign are manufactured using closed loop recycling, which involves collecting used material from customers and combining it with waste polythene produced during the manufacturing process.

Duo’s Managing Director, David Brimelow, explained: “Once we’ve collected the waste material we recycle it into pellets which are then used to manufacture new packaging products. The real beauty is there is virtually no limit to the number of times this process can be repeated, meaning closed loop recycling is a sustainable and environmentally-friendly solution. For many of our clients, including Keep Britain Tidy, being environmentally friendly is an essential part of their ethos, so this solution really appeals to them.”
