Over a million Coke bottles recycled to create seat linings

Coca-Cola Brazil is promoting the importance of recycling through a project to produce the seat linings from recycled PET bottles in the new stadia built for the World Cup.

A total of 6,700 seat linings in the new Maracanã Stadium, approximately 3,000 in Mineirão and at least five percent of the seat covers in the National Stadium in Brasilia have been made as part of the scheme.

On average, it takes around one hundred 600ml Coca-Cola bottles to create one seat cover. There was a call for nearly 1.3 million plastic bottles in order to complete the 13,000 or so seats manufactured in the project, with fans encouraged to donate their Coke bottles to one of the one hundred collection points across Brazil in late 2012 as early promotion for the World Cup.

In a pole by FIFA in late 2012 it was revealed 92 percent of Brazilian people want the world cup to be environmentally friendly.

Marcia Lins, State Secretary of Sports and Leisure in Rio de Janeiro, said: “The World Cup legacy includes a cultural and behavioural change that places great importance on the environment and is spreading to make the world better.”
