Rare peatland habitat protected with recycled plastic

A boardwalk made almost entirely from recycled bags and bottles has been installed above a rare bogland habitat in Scotland.

Langlands Moss near East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire is a rare lowland raised bog habitat nestled in the heart of Scottish suburbia on the outskirts of Glasgow. The new 374m-long raised boardwalk has been made from Duraplas recycled plastic planks and posts supplied by Liverpool-based Centriforce Products.

Duraplas profiles are made from post-consumer HDPE plastic waste – plastic that would otherwise be exported or sent to landfill.

“The old boardwalk was deteriorating and was getting slippy and on the verge of being unsafe,” said Maureen Potter, a local East Kilbride resident.

“We soon realised that a recycled plastic boardwalk was the ideal option for the wet environment, as it will not rot. The boardwalk fits well into the landscape. Visitors are amazed when they find out it’s made from recycled plastic and it’s a real bonus that we can tell them it’s made from plastic waste that would otherwise have gone to landfill,” she added.
