Village made entirely out of plastic bottles being built in Panama

An eco-residential community consisting of between 90 – 120 homes is being built in Panama – and it is made entirely out of plastic bottles.

Nestled into 83 acres of established jungle, The Plastic Bottle Village, home to “revolutionary” techniques in eco-building, uses between 10,000 and 25,000 used plastic bottles to create homes.

According to plasticbottlevillage.com, the website from the project’s founders, a human born after 1978 that lives to 80 years old, will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on the planet. The site also stated that a two-story plastic bottle house of 100 square meters or 1,000 square feet per floor can be built reusing 14,000 plastic bottles, which could “neutralise the negative effect of your passage on this planet”.

“We’re living inside what we have consumed and thrown away, re-constructing those discarded materials into modern, stylish, and quality built residencies,” Creator and Owner Robert Bezeau told the Metro.

The bottles also serve as insulation inside the concrete walls, resulting in an interior temperature that is 17 degrees Celsius cooler than the exterior, and in turn making the homes energy saving. The structure is also earthquake resistant, as the panels flex lightly and release energy.

Over the three phases of development, The Village will consist of around 120 homes/lots, as well as a small boutique, eco-lodge that will mesh with a fruit, vegetable, and herb garden for the community.

The building of phase one began in late 2015, with the construction of the community’s first, simple single story two bedroom house. The second model home in the project will commence early 2016. The Village has started selling homes in phase one, and has thirty-six natural lots left.

The community offers three model homes, designed by the team as well as top architecture firms throughout Panama and also accepts custom designed homes.
