Cars, chairs...even the coffee is plastic at BASF's stand

At Fakuma BASF is inviting visitors to its stand to enjoy a coffee from a capsule made from its latest plastics before taking a seat on a chair also manufactured from products in its portfolio.

The coffee capsules are the first prototypes made from a special grade of PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) that is designed to seal in the aroma with airtight capsules.

Known as Ultradur B1520 FC, the new grade of engineering plastic is suitable for food contact and BASF says it combines excellent barrier properties against moisture and oxygen, whilst containing the aromas of the coffee without the need for any additional complex coatings.

Visitors to the BASF stand at Fakuma will sit on the “A-Chair” from the Brunner company, which is made of Ultramid B3EG10 SI.

First introduced at the K 2013 plastics trade fair in Düsseldorf, BASF says this product family combines a high surface quality with the outstanding mechanical and chemical properties of the plastic class, in one case including special flame-resistant characteristics.

Aside from these innovations from the furniture and packaging sectors, BASF will also be presenting innovations in engineering plastics, polyurethanes and masterbatch preparations for automotive, E&E and medical technology applications at the international trade fair for plastics processing in Friedrichshafen, including engineering plastics for the BMW i3 and Citroen C4 Cactus.
