Provocative plastics will ignite debate at upcoming conference

A new conference focusing on design in plastics, from the controversial to the essential, is being held in Bournemouth in September 2015.

The inaugural event will provide an international forum for scholars, art and design practitioners, as well as members of the plastics industry to examine the past, present and potential of plastics in a balanced way.

Organisers say the conference, which will be held at the Arts University, Bournemouth, is designed to "play a key role in developing a realistic understanding of the meaning of plastics for society and in influencing how plastics are perceived and deployed in the future."

The conference is being held on 17th-18th September 2015 and confirmed speakers include Sebastian Conran, Designer, Sebastian Conran Associates; Kigge Hvid, CEO, Design to Improve Life; John Mathers, CEO, Design Council and Richard Northcote, Bayer MaterialScience.

Sessions will concentrate on the following themes and those wishing to submit an academic paper for presentation at the conference are invited to before the deadline of 2 March 2015.

Plastics’ reality: practice past and present enabled by plastics whatever the field; examples are cinematic film, prosthetics (performance and medical), packaging, space travel; and/or the reality of such practices in a world without plastics.

Material as muse: why plastics have been and are selected as the material of production; their inspirational characteristics in relation to art, design, media and performance.

Plastics and value: plastics in relation to different value systems; their changing fortunes within these systems.

Plastics and the environment: the impact of plastics, good and bad, on the environment; the relationship between plastics and world sustainability.

Plastics’ potential: how plastics are poised to deliver in the future; visions of how they can change the world for better and worse.
