All-plastic trumpet hits the high notes with Horners Award win

by

The world’s first all-plastic trumpet has been declared the winner of the 2016 Horners Award for Plastics Innovation and Design.

The pTrumpet, designed by musicians in England and produced by Warwick Music Group, is comprised of a first-of-a-kind fully plastic valve system with self-lubricating properties.

The polymer lead pipe technology used in the instrument is unique, as is the ability to manufacture the lead pipe in one unit.

Judges chose the pTrumpet as the overall winner of the Horners Award owing to the fact it made the instrument accessible and affordable for many – especially schoolchildren.

Runner-Up

The runner-up prize was awarded to GH Innovation Ltd for its Thermochromic Cable Collar.

This is a brand new electrical fire safety product that highlights high temperature or loose electrical connections by changing colour. It was commended for its potentially lifesaving properties, as one of the main causes of electrical fires in homes and businesses are overheated electrical connections.

The Horners’ Award for Plastics Design and Innovation has been running since 1947 and is believed to be the oldest design award for plastics in the world.

The award is jointly run by the Worshipful Company of Horners and the British Plastics Federation (BPF). It is awarded annually to products demonstrating innovation in plastics design and manufacture or in the processing of plastics.
