Axion’s innovative recycling projects attract first-class students

Innovative research projects using novel and emerging technologies are attracting more talented students to careers in the recycling and resource recovery sectors, according to Axion Consulting.

The Manchester-based Circular Economy specialist takes on up to six placement students annually. After their summer or one-year industry placements, Axion says many graduates subsequently secure permanent employment at its Salford and Trafford Park processing facilities.

With current recycling research projects focused on diverse areas such as flexible plastic packaging, automotive battery packs, fuel cells and medical imaging systems, Axion is seeking its next intake of new scientists and engineers to take these forward.

Engineer Simon Wilkinson, commented: “From practical field work to equipment and process trials, our work encompasses a broad variety of tasks that appeals to skilled young people.

“The skills that chemical engineers bring fit well with our business and we value their contribution.

“It works both ways, of course, and they enjoy developing their skills within our friendly teams, while also gaining valuable work experience.”

Two Manchester University graduates who recently joined Axion, Joanna Paton and Dominic Lorimer, can testify to the opportunities.

Lorimer, a Process Engineer working on product quality and process optimisation from end-of-life vehicle recycling at Axion Polymers’ Trafford Park site said: “Axion offers great opportunities to apply many different skills and investigate innovative process developments in green technologies for resource recovery. It’s a fascinating sector and I’ve already been to Germany as part of my project work.”
