JD Wetherspoons announces plastic straw ban

by

JD Wetherspoon has announced it will stop using plastic straws in all of its 900 UK outlets from January 2018.

The pub chain, which has around 1000 locations in the UK, says it will replace them with a biodegradable paper alternative.

The move is part of a wider campaign started in the US known as ‘Refuse the Straw’, which is gathering a following on social media from high profile celebrities and supports.

John Huston, Wetherspoons’ CEO, said: "These changes are part of an overall commitment from the company to reduce the amount of non-recyclable waste produced.”

Until the end of the year plastic straws will only be given to customers upon request.
