The Ocean Bottle funds plastic collectors

A new stainless steel reusable bottle, The Ocean Bottle, funds plastic collectors and develops long-term recycling infrastructure in impoverished coastal regions.

The bottle has been developed by their partners, The Plastic Bank, and Norwegian design agency, K8 Industridesign, with a focus on sustainability, usability and aesthetics.

The design combines vacuum insulation with an inbuilt NFC smart chip in the bottle, so owners can continue to fund plastic collectors by using their Ocean Bottle at the company’s partner refill locations

Purchasing one Ocean Bottle funds the collection of 11kgs of plastic, equating to a 1000 plastic bottles.

This is part of a long term strategy with their partners, The Plastic Bank and together they will be funding plastic collectors in Haiti, Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines.

The Ocean Bottle’s Kickstarter campaign was launched in November 2018, where the first batch of bottles became available.

Now the bottles are being be sold for £30 on The Ocean Bottle website and in select retail locations.

“The increase in income for plastic collectors can be life changing and the rewards they receive through the Plastic Bank’s payment system include money, food, off-grid solar, medical insurance and even access to microfinance.”

William Pearson, CEO and Founder of The Ocean Bottle, said: “When you buy one of our bottles, you’re helping stem the flow of ocean plastics, by enabling collectors to earn a fair income. The purpose of The Ocean Bottle is to create a sustainable consumer brand that makes a very large difference to the environment.”
