Developer aims to create plastic that can last 500 years

A provider of R&D and technological services has announced its commitment to developing plastics materials with long lifetimes.

Norner is dedicating what it calls its world leading competence in polymers and additives to protect data of high value to companies and people.

The end aim is to be able to protect the data for at least 500 years.

“The US Library of Congress is required to retain some of its data for the lifetime of the Republic plus 4,000 years,” said Lars Evensen, Business Development Manager at Norner. “Our ambitions do not stretch that far, but we want to secure that the materials involved in our solution can protect the data for 500 years plus.”

Cinevation AS, of Norway, has developed the data storage technology and Norner has been charged with the development of the packaging solution for the technology, which is hoped can protect the data for the required lifetime.

Evensen added: “We see an increasing interest for our capabilities within additives and stabilisation of polymers.”

Norner takes on the role as the neutral testing body and technology partner. Additives manufacturers use Norner to benchmark their products and petrochemical companies can obtain support for their polymer stabilisation challenges.
