England team kit has plenty of bottle

England and Nike have unveiled a new set of home and away kits for 2014, which will be made incorporating plastic bottles into the fabric.

In line with Nike’s commitment to superior performance with lower environmental impact, the shirts, shorts and, for the first time, socks, all feature fabric made from recycled plastic.

The shorts will be made from 100 percent polyester, with 96 percent in the shirt and 78 percent in the socks ­– with each kit being made using an average of 18 recycled plastic bottles overall.

Since 2010, Nike says it has diverted almost two billion bottles from landfill – enough to cover more than 2,800 full-sized football pitches.

“Incorporating environmental sustainability is a key part of the design and development process for us,” explained Martin Lotti, Nike Football Global Creative Director. “Our aim is to create a kit that performs for players and is good to the planet.”

England player, Wayne Rooney, said: “I’m always proud to put on the England kit and with these ones it’ll be no different. I can’t wait to get out to Brazil and play in them this summer.”

As in previous years the teams home kit will be pure white with an engineered pinstripe in the fabric and a satin tape to give the jersey a distinct shine, whilst the away kit will feature a bold red tonal pinstripe design with a subtle St. George’s cross on the front.

 The team will wear the kit as they compete in the upcoming stage matches in June against Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
