Plastics play a “vital role” says UK Prime Minister

In a letter written to the British Plastics Federation (BPF), UK Prime Minister, David Cameron, describes the role of plastics as “vital”.

In the letter, which congratulates the plastics trade body on its 80th Anniversary, Mr Cameron said the occasion gives rise to the opportunity to reflect on “the vital role that plastics play in just about every facet of our daily lives.”

The Prime Minister also said that the plastics industry is “contributing enormously to our transition to a green economy, in particular through developing and supplying low carbon products and solutions which help other manufacturing sectors.”

He paid tribute to “the energy and enterprise of thousands of mainly small and medium size businesses in the plastics and other sectors” in helping the Government to rebalance the economy. 

The letter follows a video tribute to the BPF supplied by Dr Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, in June.

The BPF's Director General, Peter Davis, said: "This letter is a top-level endorsement of the strategic importance of the UK plastics industry to the national economy and society and is a marker of the high profile the BPF has secured in Westminster."

Last month the BPF mounted an exhibition illustrating the plastics industry's potential in the foyer of the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, viewed by civil servants and members of the public. It was opened by BIS Minister, Michael Fallon MP.
